Currently proposed Federal gun legislation is merely disguised precursor to confiscation. The more honest liberals will concede that and when we see people like Little Hitler, Michael Bloomberg (Mayor of New York) spending his own money (at least he is walking his talk) pushing legistlation and declaring that citizens should not own guns, the motives are clear.
We can agree that grenade launchers are not a reasonable part of a home defense "arsenal" (and I accept disagreement with that statement) but pistols and handguns are, irrespective of the size of the magazine. So are "assault rifles." I don't choose to own one of those but there are moderate and clear thinkers who believe the uber-left may very well use deadly force one day to confiscate weapons. Those who believe this have a valid reason to carry more than a handgun.
There is no law that will force me to turn in my weapons. For the first time in my life I am willing to be called a criminal. This is the line in the sand. There is way too much danger, including from personalities like Harry Reid, Jerry Brown and of course, Mr. Obama. Local danger is for now a more imminent danger. Home invasion robberies; car-jacking, violation of restraining orders...I found poignant a recent photograph (staged but very visual) of a woman who was crouching with a pistol and about to be clubbed by some bad guy. The caption was "Should she call 9-1-1." That fits a real life experience I had when I lived in Spokane Valley, Washington. At 5:30 a.m. I noticed a burglary in progress next door to me and called 9-1-1. It took, no kidding, 45 minutes for the police to show up. Had I called on a home invasion I trust the response would have been quicker but property rights matter as well. Law enforcement currently has too much freedom to choose which crimes to chase and which to ignore.
I insist, with no compromise, on the the ability to choose my own weapon in defense of home, family and friends. All Obama & Co. will do by passing dangerous and unconstitutional legislation is turn folks like me, in to criminals. And indeed it will because I reiterate I will not turn in my weapons.
I am not aware of any proposed legislation that would stop what happened in Sandy Hook, now, Federal Way (WA), Virginia Tech and previously Fort Hood. The fact that the murderous Mr. Hasan (Ft. Hood) has yet to be prosecuted is exactly why I will remain prepared to defend myself.
Better background checks might help so long as any legislation requires that any history of those checks be destroyed after a reasonable period of time...say three years. Let me be more clear: I do not want the government tracking my choice of weapons I may use in self-defense (A background check on me will discover a speeding ticket a few years ago...that's about it).
When the horrid left chastises the NRA and the Republicans refuse to chime in toward the defense of the NRA (or I am not hearing such defense) the horrid left and its timid Republican cowards is really chastising me. I am not a member of the NRA. The NRA has supported candidates for office with awful records only because the candidate supports gun rights. I understand that is their mission but other issues of governance are important as well. The Sierra Club ties up wilderness; Home Depot supports Al Sharpton (a fact) but I am to have no one speak for me on matters of gun ownership? Fortunately there are many of us who will not be cowed by the mean-spirited uber left.
Avoiding being boxed in to poor legislation should be easy but if any Federal Legislator finds him/herself "trapped" s/he can offer any of a number of amendments, which, upon their defeat will reveal the evil intent behind the legislation and help make a case to the public that gun legislation is not as child-friendly as is touted:
1. The enforcement of all gun laws must be tabulated and reported by the Feds and states yearly. This will demonstrate that neither current nor new law is being enforced. The enforcement of all laws should be independently reported but these are important. This will be dissed at "too expensive" but is not the life of one child worth it? Gabby Giffords (AZ) would say so.
2. New laws must state repeatedly that gun confiscation is clearly in violation of the 2nd Amendment and the FEDs will litigate to overturn tougher laws that might later be enacted by the individual states. Just like the Feds litigate when the Spotted Owl is threatened or a dam threatens salmon.
3. Gun violations involving violence must require mandatory minimum sentencing with no mitigating circumstances. Mere possession of a handgun or defense of home, even by an individual not allowed to have a hand gun will NOT be a felony...though the gun might be confiscated after the fact (In New York a few years ago, a woman was found innocent of shooting an abusive husband. I disagreed with that verdict but astonishingly she faced charges that could have landed her in jail for 15 years because the hand gun she used was not registered. Can you believe that? The killing was legit but not her choice of weapons. I do not know the disposition of that case)
4. No search warrants will be issued where the intent is really to search for illegally possessed weapons. Where a bonafide need exists to search because a suspected perpetrator of another crime has that gun in the residence...then search. In other words call improper possession of a firearm that was not used in a crime a "secondary offense."
5. Gun manufacturers are generally held innocent of liability simply for having manufactured a gun that is later used in a crime. Codify that. Smith & Wesson is an eager supplier of a legitimate product; I am an eager and legitimate buyer.
6. Currently one may not sue police for failure to respond sufficiently. Consider modifying that. I understand police cannot be harrassed by nuisance suits but we have witnessed police failure to respond to restraining order violations resulting in death. There is no excuse for that.
7. Hold harmless those law enforcement officers at any level who refuse to enforce any Obama executive orders with respect to gun control.
8. Build more prisons in the name of "protecting our childeren." Uber leftists don't like prisons, preferring "rehabilitation" (and they claim that a disproportionate number of minorities are incarcerated) but if they are truly concerned about protecting kids then it is worth extra money for prisons instead of the confiscation of weapons from those who will never use a weapon for anything other than self defense. Thus we protect BOTH children and the 2nd amendment.
These amendments won't be adopted because the true intent of the uber left is to strip citizens of handguns. These amendments as well as their failure will reveal the intent of the uber left. Some very careful legislation with safeguarding of 2nd amendement rights might be valuable.
Remember what Hitler said (I paraphrase): "Having removed handguns from Germany we will now enjoy a safer country." What a cruel scam and I will not be a victem to that or a rogue criminal if I have any opportunity to protect myself and my family.
